Vestibular Rehabilitation

Symptoms of vestibular dysfunction can include vertigo, dizziness, nausea, visual disturbance, or loss of balance. A common cause of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (or BPPV). BPPV results when small particles in the inner ear, often referred to as “crystals”, become dislodged and move through the semicircular canals of the inner ear. The brain then receives stimulus from the crystal movement which conflicts with information from the other systems of the body. This produces a sensation of spinning or dizziness with quick movements of the head such as rolling out of bed or bending over.

Physical Therapy is an effective treatment for many vestibular disorders. During the initial evaluation, your physical therapist will perform several tests to determine the source of your dizziness and make recommendations for treatment. BPPV can often be resolved in as little as one treatment session and can be performed at your initial visit. Please avoid taking any anti-dizziness medication such as Meclizine within 24 hours of your appointment.
